Associativity

March 27th, 2008

Does anyone have any music they associate with any particular event or time of their life?

I’m listening to Bob Marley right now, and it makes me so happy and relaxes me so much because it reminds me of when I was little when my Dad and I used to make breakfast on weekend mornings. It makes me think of big, fluffy pancakes and how I always used to lift the pancake and dad would say, “It isn’t ready yet, be patient!” I still listen to Bob Marley when I’m in a bad mood, it helps a lot. So I have a very big appreciation for Bob Marley, but not for the same reason as most.

Totally! I like the word you use, associativity, I’ve always wished there was a good word to describe it.

There is plenty of music I associate with different times and events, especially since I have come to college I feel it more. I first started listening to Big Star and Joni Mitchell last spring semester so now that is spring is coming again I started playing them more and I get that feeling of nostalgia of my freshman year.

I also have a connection between Bob Marley and my dad. He gave me a Bob Marley album for Christmas one year, and so me and him spent time listening to it together. I also listen to Marley whenever I am feeling down and I need a lift.

I could go on and on, but it is indeed something I am very interested in, especially since that music takes a different meaning than someone else who has no special ties to the music. It is even my excuse at times for liking bad music.

    Great post.
